The next US presidential election is less than 4 months away!! The best (or worst?) are yet to come as we get closer to the general election in November. The onslaught of political ads, commercials and marketing began with the primaries. Included with all the ads are tons of political signs. I’m sure your neighborhood, like many others, are full of political yard signs.
So, do political yard signs actually influence voters?
The typical political yard sign does not usually give any specific information about the candidate. Once and a while, it may include a political party or slogan, but typically not much more. Yet, people still religiously place them on street corners and in front yards every year, but why? Is this really enough to sway voters or just a complete waste of resources?
There is some research out there that indicates that political signs do have some impact. Trends suggest that yard signs can be effective in improving name recognition by being placed in locations where they are seen repeatedly by commuters and passersby. This can be especially cost effective for new candidates just trying to get their name out there.
Does a personal endorsement from your neighbors affect your vote? Candidates often like the “neighborhood support” that yard signs provide. Signs placed in front yards or at local stores may influence neighbors and the local community if the people displaying the signs are trustworthy and respected.
Other ways that political signs may have an effect include:
- Encouraging neighbors to engage in the political process
- Keeping the person with the sign engaged and focused on supporting their candidate
- Subconsciously inspiring undecided voters to take a deeper look at the candidate you support
So in the end, political signs may work, but most likely to a limited degree. So will you put a political yard sign out this election year?
